Conclusion

Overall, the studies described above provide evidence that fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, and legumes comprise a vast array of biologically active flavonoids, many of which have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. The considerable evidence suggests that flavonoids in a diet rich in fruits and vegetables are associated with a decreased risk of inflammation-regulated chronic diseases, including cancer. Most of this evidence is preclinical, and more clinical trials are needed to further strengthen this evidence. Because most chronic diseases, including cancer, incubate for 20–30 years before they manifest, structuring such clinical trials will be difficult. It remains unknown what amount of flavonoids are needed and for how long and whether it is better to consume food with flavonoids or if supplements will suffice. The evidence, however, that these flavonoids are safe, multitargeted, efficacious, and affordable demands further investigation in cancer and other chronic diseases.

Boswellia:
Boswellia Serrata is an extract of Indian frankincense. It has
long been a favorite of mine to help decrease inflammation in
the gut and brain, and now studies are coming out that are
proving its effectiveness in cancer. The most promising study
came from Streffer et al, who investigated the use of a
Boswellia preparation in 12 patients with cerebral edema and
demonstrated a clinical or radiological response in 8 of 12
patients. Boeker and Winking had similar results in a small
prospective study. In a systematic review, Ernst found 7
controlled clinical trials investigating the anti‐inflammatory
effects of Boswellia. These studies were related to the
treatment of asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn disease,
collagenous colitis, and osteoarthritis.
Another study showed almost unbelievable benefits of
Boswellia on patients with brain tumors; notorious for mobility
due to chronic inflammation. They conducted a randomized,
placebo‐controlled, double‐blind study to investigate the
efficacy of Boswellia on cerebral edema in patients irradiated
for brain tumors.
The results were astonishing: “Compared with baseline and if
measured immediately after the end of radiotherapy and
BS/placebo treatment, a reduction of cerebral edema of
>75% was found in 60% of patients receiving BS and in 26%
of patients receiving placebo (P = .023.) These findings may
be based on an additional antitumor effect.”
For them to even document the “anti-tumor effect” was
exciting and a bit risky for them to report.

Conclusions & further directions:

Metastasis is a multistep and multifunctional biological event and is considered the final and most-life threatening stage of cancer progression. The high morbidity and mortality related to cancer metastasis are due to the lack of effectiveness of current therapeutic regimes; alternatively, the use of nutraceutical agents has been suggested for the prevention and treatment of advanced cancers. Nutraceutical agent silibinin has shown remarkable anti-metastatic efficacy against many cancers in various pre-clinical models. The anti-metastatic efficacy of silibinin has been reported through pleiotropic mechanisms including the inhibition of EMT in cancer cells. However, more studies are still needed to further confirm the anti-EMT and anti-metastatic effect of silibinin in a wide variety of human cancer cells under in vivo conditions. Furthermore, silibinin should be tested in the metastatic models, which more closely represent human metastatic disease condition. In the future, there should also be greater emphasis on to understand the role of tumor microenvironment in metastasis initiation and progression as well as how silibinin affects these interactions. Overall, it is reasonable to anticipate that in the near future silibinin would be an important non-toxic nutraceutical agent in the management of metastatic cancers.  Source:

Taurine (chemical structure C₂H₇NO₃S or NH₂CH₂CH₂SO₃H) is a non-essential amino acid that does not participate in protein synthesis, since it is devoid of a carboxyl group, while it does not constitute an energy source, since it is not metabolized or involved in gluconeogenesis [16]. The biosynthesis of taurine (Tau) occurs primarily in the liver, in the kidney, and to a smaller extent, in the brain [17,18], and relies on the metabolism of cysteine and methionine [19]. Tau is involved in osmoregulation, the modulation of protein phosphorylation, calcium ion regulation, anti-oxidant response, membrane stabilization, bile acid conjugation, lipid metabolism, glucose regulation [20]. Tau displays a strong growth-inhibitory effect on multiple cancer types including colon cancer [21,22], lung cancer [23], hepatocarcinoma [24], pancreatic cancer [25], glioma [26], melanoma [27], breast cancer [28,29,30,31], nasopharyngeal carcinoma [32], prostate cancer [33,34] and ovarian cancer [35]. Additionally, Tau has been shown to attenuate the toxic side effects of classical chemotherapeutic drugs (doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, cis-platin, tamoxifen), thereby enhancing their therapeutic efficacy [36,37,38,39,40]. In colon cancer, Tau has been shown to cause apoptosis to a greater extent in p53 mutant (HT-29) than p53 proficient (LoVo) colon cancer cells [21]. Tau has also been proved to induce apoptosis in p53 mutant (Caco2) colon cancer cells, not only relying on p53 but also on the MSTI-JNK signaling pathway [22].
